I felt annoyed when my mom sent a photo of the leaking tap in our Kochi house. Not worried first—annoyed. I was between two calls in the shared room, with somebody’s socks drying on the chair, and I told her to ask the neighbour’s plumber again. Then she replied only that she had managed it. That was worse. I send money when needed and speak confidently about repairs, but I am not there to move the bucket or check if the switch is wet. My wife had already handled the plumber last month, and I had still acted as if I was carrying the house from here. I called later, but mom was sleeping. I left the phone beside my bed.
