A colleague in the same operations line told me about his new package

A colleague in the same operations line told me about his new package. Similar supervisory work, but noticeably higher salary and accommodation allowance. I congratulated him, of course, but honestly it is bothering me more than I expected. I have been here for years, doing the work and accepting the same routine. Now I keep thinking, so they can pay that much more? Maybe the company knows I will tolerate less and stay quiet. Then again, I don’t know the full conditions of his offer or what risk he has taken. I should have checked outside earlier instead of waiting for someone to recognise my experience. But changing jobs here is not simple. There can be probation, accommodation problems, recruitment charges, even a gap between jobs. My wife and children are in Kochi. If something goes wrong, they carry it also. Feeling petty because I am calculating his salary instead of just being happy for him. But the comparison has made my own situation look foolish. Should I first ask my manager for a salary review, or quietly speak to recruiters and test the market? Can this be done without my current employer knowing or getting trapped by unnecessary agency fees?

This sounds less like jealousy and more like realising that staying quiet may have a financial cost. I’d quietly update the CV and speak to reputable recruiters first, without resigning or alerting the company. Ask upfront about agency fees, probation, accommodation, notice-period handling, and actual net salary—not just the headline package. Then take market evidence to your manager for a factual review discussion. With family obligations, don’t jump until the full package and risks are clear.
