Struggling to Join Fast-Paced Academic Discussions as an International Student

I had a seminar today where the discussion moved quickly and everyone else seemed to know when to jump in. I understood the material, but I kept waiting for the right pause, and by the time I had something ready to say, the class had moved on. I sounded much more capable in my head than I looked in that room. I’m still adjusting to how participation and informal academic discussion work here after moving from Canada. I waited for the perfect moment and missed it. Now I’m worried I’ll become the quiet international student who has nothing to add, when really I just don’t know when to enter the conversation yet. Would preparing one sentence in advance actually make speaking easier?

Preparing the point is useful, but preparing the entry matters too: “I’d like to add something to that” can be enough to claim a pause before the perfect wording disappears.
