Feeling Overwhelmed When Family Support Is Limited to a Spouse

I asked my parent if they could visit or call for a little while because this has been a hard week. They told me my spouse should be the person supporting me. My spouse is supportive, but I was asking for my parent, not asking my spouse to do more. I already spend so much of my time with my partner talking about the baby, work, money, and what needs to happen next. Sometimes I want to be somebody’s daughter for an hour, not another adult coordinating care. It hurts when marriage is treated like proof that I no longer need my family.

“Sometimes I want to be somebody’s daughter for an hour” makes the distinction especially clear: your parent’s call would not be redundant support; it would be comfort from that particular relationship. Maybe they hear “my spouse is not enough” when you are actually saying “I miss being your child.”
