My colleague got promoted today, and I’m trying to act normal about it because I genuinely like her. But I’ve been doing work above my title for quite some time, and suddenly I’m wondering if I’m only trusted with the work, not considered for the title. My manager has kept the progression discussion vague whenever I brought it up. I also should have asked more directly before this decision, so maybe I made it easy for everyone to avoid giving a clear answer. Still, I really don’t want to train someone for the role I thought I was working towards. I have a home loan and shared expenses, so quitting impulsively is not an option. But if I wait another year and hear the same vague things, I’ll be even more stuck. What should I ask for in the meeting exactly—criteria, specific gaps, and a review date? And do I start quietly applying before that conversation or wait?
