Why was my availability the first thing assumed

Why was my availability the first thing assumed? A school pickup landed on one of my nursing shifts, and the immediate expectation seemed to be that I’d rearrange work or figure it out. The pickup got covered, but I’m tired of being the automatic backup. I want to be dependable for my kid, but nursing shifts aren’t always movable, and quietly solving this every time just teaches everyone that my schedule is the flexible one. I’ve suggested we review shifts, pickups, and backup options weekly instead of waiting for the next emergency. Seems fair, but apparently it’s still one more thing to organize.

The weekly review sounds completely fair, but it shouldn’t become another task where you’re still responsible for organizing everyone else’s share. Being dependable for your child doesn’t mean your nursing shifts are automatically the flexible option.
