Home loan EMI got debited just one day after my severance came in. Then two normal household payments also went out, and suddenly the joint account balance looks much lower than I had planned for. I know the EMI is my responsibility. Still, seeing so much money disappear in one debit when I am already out of work has made me angry. Now even a small expense feels like it needs a discussion. I had been carefully tracking savings, but maybe I was too optimistic about how long they would last. We may have to delay sending some money to my parents in Jaipur, which is making me feel quite guilty. At the same time I don't want my wife worrying every time she suggests some ordinary purchase. For a few minutes I was thinking she should just stop asking for anything, which is unfair and I know it. Has anyone actually spoken to the bank about temporary restructuring or any EMI relief after losing a job? Is it better to ask immediately, or just cut expenses quietly and wait until the job search becomes clearer? I don't want to discuss this with friends or former colleagues, but the savings buffer suddenly feels unsafe.
