I had the placement form open in the lab when my friend leaned over and asked whether I had submitted it. The C program was giving an error on one side of my screen and the form was asking me to confirm the service-company test. He had already selected yes. He said I should also do it because this is not the time to act choosy, in that half-joking way which was not fully a joke. I told him I was going to write it. I do want a software role, but I also know I have not prepared properly for the companies coming to campus. I keep saying I will start after finishing one project, then after the next internal, and now the test is this week. Even the basic aptitude topics are sitting in my notebook with only headings. I have opened that notebook many times and mostly checked messages instead. The irritating part is that I felt he was judging me, though he probably was only telling me the practical thing. I became quiet after that and submitted the form. Then I spent the rest of the lab feeling as if I had made some big career decision, when actually I had only clicked yes for one test. At night I tried one preparation video. After ten minutes I started thinking whether writing this test means I am giving up on the role I actually want. This is also a little dramatic because getting a job offer does not force me to accept it. But if I keep preparing only for the job I hope for, and not the tests that are actually available, I may finish college with a very good explanation and no offer. I have not told my parents that I am confused about this. They know about the placement updates and ask only whether I registered. I said yes. Today I opened the aptitude notebook again, found the same page, and wrote the test date at the top.
