my cab was already downstairs when mummy called for the third time. I saw her name and let it ring because my team lead had kept us for one more call review, and I was standing near the security desk with my headset still around my neck. The guard was watching some cricket highlights on his phone. When I reached the flat, I had two missed calls and one message saying call when free. I called from the kitchen while my flatmate was heating chai. Mummy asked if I had eaten, then said the electrician in our Patna house had asked for advance again. I told her I had just paid for the cab and my rent was due. Not angrily, but my voice became like that only. She said she was not asking me to send immediately, she was just informing. I said then why call three times during my shift. This sounded very rude after I said it. She went quiet and asked if work was too much. I said no, it is fine... which also means I didn’t want to explain anything. Then she told me to sleep and cut the call. My chai was ready but I didn’t feel like taking it. I stood there checking the cab receipt in my email, as if some mistake would show there. Later I sent a smaller amount without discussing it. Now I am irritated with her, and also with myself for waiting till she had to ask. I don’t know how to stop these calls from becoming money conversations without avoiding mummy completely.
