The result page was open on my phone, but I kept looking at the college portal login screen instead. I had already checked the internal marks twice in the corridor and knew the number was not going to improve. My roommate was doing a video call on the bed, so I was sitting on the floor with my notes folded under one knee. When my mother called, I said the test had gone bad. Not failed, just lower than I expected. She first asked if I had eaten, then whether I was studying properly. Her voice became careful after that, which was worse than scolding. She said these small tests also show where we are going wrong, and I said yes, yes, I know. Thoda irritating, because I did know. Then she started telling me to make a proper timetable. I was quiet and she thought the call had broken. I said I was listening. Actually I was watching someone’s blue pen roll slowly near the staircase and trying not to cry over marks which were not even that terrible. After the call I opened the notes again. I read the same heading, underlined one line, and then checked the portal once more. My roommate asked if I wanted tea. I said no, and left the pen on the floor.
