I nearly ignored my wife’s message because the night shift handover was already going badly. She had sent a photo of the water bill and said mom had gone to the office to ask about it. My first thought was that this could have waited until morning here. Then I remembered mom doesn’t like going alone for these things. I called during the break, but she had not come back. My wife said she would manage it, in that flat voice which means she has already managed it and does not want another instruction from me. I told her I would speak to the office from Dubai. It sounded useful when I said it. Probably not very useful. After the call I kept the phone beside the roster sheet and checked whether mom had returned. I did not call again. I was tired, and also ashamed that I had made her small problem into an interruption for me. This is becoming a pattern, I think, but I don’t know what action actually changes it. I signed the handover form and left the pen there.
