Not sure if I am being unfair here
Not sure if I am being unfair here... Yesterday my father put in the family WhatsApp group that the old ancestral house needs repair before my cousin’s engagement. He said I should arrange the contractor and pay the first installment from the business account. No discussion before this. I replied that I will look into it, and my wife saw the message before I told her. She asked why I agree first and explain later. Fair question. The repair is needed, I am not denying that. My parents have supported me and I also understand this property may help our children later. But last year I paid for urgent plumbing work and the others were supposed to share later. Nothing happened. My younger brother has equal connection to the property but somehow arranging and paying becomes my duty because I handle the accounts. Business cash flow is not fixed. Supplier payments, school fees and scooter repair are already there. My wife only asked me to give a maximum amount before I speak to my father. I realised I don’t even know if I am allowed to set a limit without looking selfish. If I say the business cannot pay without a budget and equal contributions, relatives may say I am insulting the cousin and dividing the family. If I arrange it first, maybe recovering the money later will again become impossible. Is it normal to ask everyone to contribute and set a clear spending limit for ancestral property, even with parents? Or am I being unnecessarily calculating?
