The training message is pinned on my phone under a grocery list and family WhatsApp replies saying “she will manage.” I keep looking at it. My MIL said I should stop looking for outside work for now and handle meals, cleaning and childcare because relatives are coming next weekend. I replied yes, I will manage. Then my husband asked why I agreed again. Honestly, I don’t know. Nobody forced me exactly. I just said yes before I could create an issue. Now the training shift I need to confirm tomorrow overlaps with the shopping and preparation. This is a small local opportunity after several years focused on my child, but if I cancel again I may lose it. A previous interview already got affected because I was expected to accompany my MIL somewhere and I didn’t correct the assumption in time. I am angry that my free time is treated like family property, but also guilty because the house is functioning and my child does need me. I want my husband to speak to his mother, but I also want to remain the agreeable daughter-in-law. Very foolish combination, I know. How do people set a limit in this situation without the whole thing becoming “career has made her arrogant”? Should I tell the training centre I can’t commit, or tell the family I can only help for part of the visit?
