The person who got promoted today has just asked me “can you quickly check this?” for tomorrow’s client presentation. I am sitting with her deck open and my resume open in the next tab. My tea is cold. Very normal evening otherwise. She is not a bad person. I actually like working with her and she did not make the decision. But she will present it with the new title, while I am expected to support the meeting and fix whatever needs fixing. I want the presentation to go well. I also want, just for once, not to quietly make the promoted person’s work better after being passed over. This has been building for almost a year. I handled a difficult release, trained people, stayed late during escalations. My manager kept saying delivery and visibility would put me in line. The appraisal feedback was positive but vague. I kept postponing the direct conversation because I did not want to sound entitled. Now I am wondering if I was just making it easy for them. My husband asked whether I really want to leave or whether I only want them to notice me here. Both, I think. But we have a home loan, so resigning dramatically is not an option. Also part of me wants the company to regret losing me, which is not exactly a career plan. Should I review the presentation properly tonight, then ask my manager for a concrete promotion path? Or limit my help and say I cannot keep doing higher-level work without recognition? People who have been passed over, what did you do? I don’t want to punish the wrong person, but I also don’t want to automatically be dependable support for another appraisal cycle.
